Played a few days ago and forgot to post here but:
My thoughts (may contain spoilers):
I think I said it in the video but if not to me this is probably one of the simplest yet terrifying games I have ever played. If there is an award for indie horror games this should for sure be a nominee. Bro when I tell you I fell for pretty much EVERY jumpscare! Not gonna lie I was lost for a portion of the game as I went in with an assumption about the story, something I try not to do but it worked out. The ending had me flabbergasted. Never in the entirety of the game (well a decent part of it anyways) did I consider that maybe lil dude was alr dead. Heck, I went into the game not even noticing that mr red face was prob the dad. I didnt catch this till I was already playing for a bit. I didnt even catch that the spell i threw in the room with the mom was the hotel card to where the dad was. I mentioned it somewhat in the vid but it dint FULLY hit me until i went to edit. The kids I encounter being dead kids "looking for their parents?" I didnt even consider this either until it was made super obvious later on. 10/10 for me!
This game has nothing to say that other games haven't said before but better, and definitely doesn't live up to the hype. It presents its subject matter and then says nothing meaningful about it, nor does it explore it in any meaningful way, instead choosing to use it for cheap shock value and forced emotional moments. Not an offensively bad game but nowhere near what other people say it is. Definitely a beginner game, and there's nothing wrong with that, but also definitely NOT worth the praise it gets.
I don't think you understood the game well enough. Tell me if I'm wrong, but I think that you ran into the game with your own EXTREMELY high expectations.
You decided to compare this game to others that may or may not be directly related.
You then wanted to point out that the game isn't deserving because it didn't meet YOUR expectations while just about everybody else says otherwise.

I came into this game with high expectations, because everyone was praising this game like it's some deep, high art, with this super sad and mortifying, scarring and life-changing story, and not a humble little itch.io indie game made by one person with an okay at best story. I understood the game plenty - there isn't much TO understand, it's a very barebones story about a homicide case. I just think that this game does not live up to what everyone says it is (there are seriously comments on here saying it's their "game of the year" which is frankly absurd), which was the entire point of my comment.
A true depiction of what it's like to live in a ab**ive household and what trauma some kids have to go through on a daily basis, eagerly waiting for what the part 2 will have to offer!
very well written and I loved the sort of retro style the game has. This game is another example of an imaginative game and has some originality that's hard to see in the plethora of games made today. it's not as if games about sensitive topics like these aren't made. It's more so how it's conveyed in the game. Until we see the twist near the end there is fore-shadowing and things that the player could miss that makes you want to play again or to see someone else's review after you play the game because of the feeling that the game leaves on you. The artstyle of the game adds to the intensity i felt while playing as well. I think the fact that many popular youtubers are playing it is just a reflection of how good this game is made and the countless of theories that people are still continuing to make. That's what i also love about this game. Although the production of the 2nd game is already being worked on (I presume) people are still stuck on and talking about the 1st. I think a game that causes people to think, theorise and talk about it is another good factor this game has. Also the emotion that it makes the reader feel, is still portrayed so well without needing extreme graphics (blah blah yk what i mean) I'm rambling but in short
